1.1 This guide is applicable to both the plant-wide computer integrated manufacturing (CIM), and the less sophisticated computer-controlled manufacturing types of computerized manufacturing systems discussed in this document. It describes how to prepare the system specification, the interface design specification (IDS), and the purchase description for a General Contractor to furnish custom developed systems of either type including all necessary hardware, software, and telecommunication.
1.2 Some of these items may be prepared by subcontractors operating outside the provisions of this guide. The guide outlines technical details and information that should be included, suggests various important aspects of the system specification that could otherwise be overlooked, describes the timing of the supplier’s effort in relation to the project phases, and the division of responsibilities between user and supplier. It provides baseline definition of interfaces between electrical, mechanical, control equipment, and software. If design responsibility for either hardware or software is shared between user and supplier, it may be necessary to include (as part of the system specification) a description of how the efforts of the user relate to the efforts of the supplier. Certain portions of the documentation described by this guide may be prepared under contract, however, such contractor shall not be in a conflict of interest position with those contractors who may supply components of the CIM System.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
